Starting fall 2022, travelers departing from the New Terminal A will embark on a Digital Journey of Surprises that guides them from curb to gate.

As part of the largest design-build project in the state’s history, the redevelopment of the New Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) will provide a world-class passenger experience and showcase the best of what New Jersey has to offer.

Developed in collaboration with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Munich Airport International, the new terminal takes visitors on a journey of surprises, including a series of permanent large-scale multimedia activations by Moment Factory.

The Digital Journey of Surprises is strategically designed to provide an entertaining experience within a highly functional space. Located at key touchpoints throughout the passenger experience, each multimedia feature offers travelers the chance to encounter the iconic spirit of New Jersey’s people, landmarks, and innovations.

“As a major air travel hub, Newark serves as a gateway for popular destinations across North America and abroad. Now visitors to the New Terminal A will encounter New Jersey as a diverse and lively destination in its own right,” says Amy Chartrand, Creative Director, Moment Factory.

As travelers enter the Departure Hall, a Welcome Banner radiates calm energy and blends in with its surroundings. Then, to the surprise of onlookers, a wayward beach ball or errant kite breaks the illusion and the digital fresco opens to reveal a star-studded lineup of New Jersey highlights. The journey continues in the Retail Hall where the Forest of Firsts, made up of eight towering LED pillars, offers dynamic homages to the state’s spirit of innovation. At the flight gates, informative pylons bridge the threshold between New Jersey and the next destination with a mix of practical flight information, intuitive boarding cues,  and fun-to-know Jersey trivia. Landside, inbound passengers know they’ve arrived in New Jersey when they reach an iconic NJ sculpture featuring 12-foot-tall letters planted in a lush ‘Garden State’ shaped island.

Supported by custom software and a perennial content program, the smart multimedia ecosystem rewards attention without demanding it, contributing to the safe and efficient flow of traffic.

To help bring this ambitious project to fruition, Moment Factory appointed experiential  technology company Electrosonic. Their deep expertise in the design, build and servicing of AV technologies opened the way to innovative solutions, making them ideal partners for this project. In addition, Electrosonic’s local field experience played a pivotal role in meeting the project’s tight timelines.

“Moment Factory’s expertise in world-renowned travel hubs enables us to produce an enhanced passenger experience infused with an authentic sense of place” says Mikael Charpin, Producer, Moment Factory. “ With the New Terminal A both travelers and the state of New Jersey are at the heart of the Digital Journey of Surprises.”

Moment Factory’s past projects include Hong Kong International AirportSingapore Changi Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Moynihan Train Hall and Shinjuku Station.
