As part of its centennial celebration, Kyoto Botanical Gardens opens its conservatory after dark, inviting guests to discover an immersive experience that pays homage to nature’s beauty with light and music.
In celebration of Kyoto Botanical Gardens’ centennial anniversary, Kyoto prefecture invited Moment Factory to present Light Cycles, with the support of Mitsui Fudosan. This immersive experience welcomes guests to Japan’s oldest public plant sanctuary after sundown to discover the magic of the botanical world through immersive multimedia activations.
By seamlessly blending botanical diversity with cutting-edge projection mapping, light effects, and sound, the experience becomes a natural highlight for such an important occasion. Set in the garden’s conservatory, the visitor journey unfolds across four multi-sensory zones that reveal the hidden world and voices of plants. Unique to Light Cycles Kyoto, the first zone, Light Will Find You, draws inspiration from the Japanese word komorebi, which evokes the sensation of sunlight filtering through tree leaves.
Moment Factory’s relationship with Kyoto Prefecture and Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd. highlights its presence in Japan, where the studio has maintained an office for seven years and launched projects such as The Colour Bath at Tokyo Shinjuku Station, Kamuy Lumina on the shores of Lake Akan, and Island Lumina on Iojima. With headquarters in Montreal, the studio leverages a hybrid, multi-timezone model to extend collaboration across regions, maximizing productivity and creativity throughout the day.
Building on this solid foundation in Japan, Moment Factory combines global expertise with a deep understanding of the local market to create immersive experiences that resonate with local audiences and tourists alike. To bring Light Cycles Kyoto to life, the studio collaborated closely with local partners including the Government of Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd. and the Délégation générale du Québec à Tokyo. The project was also supported by an international creation and production team with members from Canada, Japan, and Australia, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and expertise.
The premiere of Light Cycles in Kyoto marks the third opening of this Moment Factory Original, which debuted at Adelaide Botanic Garden in Australia and is set to open in Italy and the United Kingdom this year. This world-class, site-specific installation aims to inspire a new appreciation for plant life, and foster a deep connection with nature for future generations.
