Moment Factory was enlisted by the National Geographic Society to lead the creative and technical design of the Geoverse, an immersive education space in its Museum of Exploration, along with the development of its first two experiences: “Geography in Action” and “A Day in the Desert.”
The mandate was one of several for the studio at the Washington, D.C. museum, including an ocean-themed outdoor show and an immersive photography exhibition.
“Geography in Action” is a seven-minute immersive show spotlighting the field research of National Geographic Explorers. Designed for school groups, the show blends on-the-ground footage, data visualizations, dynamic typography, and motion graphics to showcase the diverse perspectives Explorers bring to their work.
For young families, “A Day in the Desert” is an interactive experience featuring simple, curiosity-led gameplay, revealing fun facts about the plant and animal life in the Great Victoria Desert.
The experiences unfold in a space equipped with 270-degree wraparound projections, an interactive floor, and spatialized audio. Accessibility was central to the design of the Geoverse experiences, which feature modular seating, scale-tested closed captioning, and an optional American Sign Language guide.
The collaboration highlights the potential of feature-rich immersive spaces as versatile educational tools, capable of adapting to different thematic content and audiences of varying ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
