Opening July 17, the first edition of Illuminate Adelaide, an annual winter festival of innovation, music, art, and technology, shines a light on the city’s vibrant culture and attractions. Moment Factory is honoured to make its Australian premiere as a featured international artist with Light Cycles, an outdoor experience at Adelaide Botanic Garden that comes to life at night.
Light Cycles invites visitors to connect with nature’s secret rhythms through intricate light, music, and video art installations. Following the Botanic Garden Pathway, the immersive experience takes guests on an hour-long journey through seven distinct zones, starting with an ethereal tunnel of fog clouds and an ode to the setting sun. Along the way, imaginative illuminations and a dynamic soundscape conjure the frequencies of the forest, the hidden language of trees, and the reflective power of a calm lake surface.
Light Cycles was inspired by Adelaide Botanic Garden’s sprawling canvas. More than half of the concepts were developed in situ, tailor-made for the environment and Illuminate Adelaide’s vision. Part of the process also involved reimagining elements from Moment Factory’s repertoire. Three installations were adapted from North Forest Lights, the award-winning experience at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, which builds on our Lumina Night Walk series.
Creating four new custom installations for Illuminate Adelaide proved challenging due to pandemic-related travel restrictions, but was made possible through close collaboration with the festival’s team and Moment Factory’s Forest Lab, a test site with a lake in the Quebec woods. Innovative use of 3D scans, aerial photography, and virtual technology, allowed Moment Factory’s teams to design multimedia features with precision and seamlessly map them onto Adelaide Botanic Garden’s groves and landscapes.
