Participation is Risky

January, 2017

Created as part of Moment Factory’s yearly camping trip, this spider web made from packing tape created a play space for kids of all ages. Inspired by similar packing tape structures by (Numen / For Use etc.) we wanted to bring a little bit of luminous interactivity to the genre. By installing fibre optic cables and piezo electric triggers within the tape, the idea was to illuminate the connections between people as they moved around within it, triggering the piezos and thus the fibre optics. But as is often the case with interactive experiments, the way people used the structure was a bit more vigorous than expected. Within a half hour the fibre optic interactivity was busted, and an alternative use of the installation as a trampoline had been discovered. By nightfall the tape structure had a very lived-in feel, with plenty of loungers and lovers getting cozy, and by morning it was frayed and looked more web-like than anyone could have imagined.
