Each kit includes various types of handheld multimedia devices disguised as Parks Canada gear: maps, lanterns, flashlights, backpacks and more.

The group explores the park together using their tool kit. The operation is foolproof thanks to a wireless deployable system that turns the tools automatically on and off, triggering video content, special effects, music and voice over. With the tools uniquely activated at different spots across the park, participants work together to stage multimedia moments of discovery. From salmon swimming up the Rouge River to a submerged town of Lake Minnewanka, each moment is a combination of multimedia effects created by the tool kit.

The experience was offered at and tailored to two different sites: Banff National Park in Alberta, and Rouge Urban National Park in east Toronto. In each case, the parks are shaped by unseen cultural, ecological, and geological narratives. The team wanted to make these narratives visible, but also demonstrate how their multiplicity and continuity shapes the landscapes and wildlife ecosystems.

As both sites are National Parks, the team also sought a ‘leave no trace’ approach for the project. To minimize onsite installation, the entire operation was designed to be battery-powered and portable; participants could ‘pack in and pack out’ their experience. We further neutralized the project’s carbon footprint with the purchase of carbon credits, another first for Moment Factory.

Participants discover a new view of the parks through both through the collective group format and the content of the experience, which includes collaboration with Indigenous communities. With a nod to the future of these spaces, Illuminations: human/nature invites participants to consider the real lack of boundaries between humans and wild nature in urban and conservation contexts. The company quickly rose to a leadership position in the transportation-equipment industry thanks to its snowmobiles, subway cars and airplanes. Moment Factory also designed a multimedia-art installation for the outside walls of the museum, as a tribute to the creativity and ingenuity of the inventors who built Bombardier’s reputation. To that end, Moment Factory created an innovative and immersive scenography supported by original music that fits seamlessly with the narration. Our team wanted to bring the public inside the world of assembly lines by creating a room with an industrial look, with two walls covered entirely by digital screens hidden behind sliding factory doors. The doors open and close as a compelling visual story unfolds, accompanied by an epic soundtrack and engaging lighting effects. At key moments, images are also projected over the entire surface of a third wall to enhance the sense of immersion. By controlling the canvas in this way, Moment Factory is able to direct viewers’ attention to dynamic 3D animations (including newspaper clippings, engineering plans and vintage advertisements) that bring to life key moments in the company’s history. For the occasion, we re-conceptualized the arena’s concourse as the Hall of Heroes, effectively creating a public space where fans could engage with the team’s history and take their part in it. When visitors arrive to the Hall of Heroes, they find something familiar, and yet there is still a great deal to discover with layers of facts and figures supported by footage of memorable plays. We even installed a photobooth at Trevor Linden’s bench so fans can take a snapshot and then share it through the system on social media or by email. Further along, ‘Forever Canucks’ is a hallway of framed LED screens we equipped with motion sensors so the installation responds to a fan’s presence. It features a catalogue of interactive player cards to take visitors back to the nostalgia of card trading and a virtual carousel that allows fans to access top ten moments like best goals, all on a custom graphic interface branded for the Vancouver Canucks. If an incredible play happens during a game, the system even has the web-smart technology to update the installation in real time based on fan votes. We wanted to create an installation that would speak to and enhance the fan experience for all ages. We accomplished this by designing an installation customized for the Canucks fan, a cross between a museum exhibit that displays historical moments and an immersive and multimedia environment with many opportunities for interactivity. Visitors navigate the installation at their own pace as they pass through the arena’s concourse, priming them for the main event to follow as the legendary team hits the ice., Stadiums Arenas, Branded Contents, Digital Placemaking, Immersive Experiences, Interactivity Gamification

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts invited Moment Factory to bring our expertise in participatory installations to the visitor experience of their Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition. Working closely with the curators at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the onsite team at the Grand Palais, we developed a concept to activate the Escalier des Arts, a staircase located in between the first and second floors of the museum. Contrasting the classic baroque lines of the undulating staircase with imagery reminiscent of Gaultier’s in-your-face approach to haute couture, the installation evokes a boldness fit for the couturier’s world. As visitors reach the top of the staircase, they are face to face with a screen. Standing before the installation, which functions like a mirror reflecting Gaultier’s vision, visitors see themselves as Gaultier would see them. After all, the ‘enfant-rebelle’ couturier is famous for finding his muses in everyday life. In reflecting on the exhibition, it was important for visitors to be able to see the relationship between their unique beauty and the fashion as something to be worn. Participatory technology could play a key role in making this connection. Our installation created an essential link in the exhibition between everyday muse and affectionately inspired garment.
