PROJECTION MAPPING BRINGS KUNG FU PANDA OUT OF THE SCREEN

At Universal Studios Hollywood, audiences are treated to an immersive cinematic experience using projection mapping with the DreamWorks Theatre attraction.

For the DreamWorks Theatre attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Creative wanted to feature the Kung Fu Panda films in a 4-D experience that would combine traditional moviegoing with the excitement of a ride. Universal Creative sought Moment Factory’s expertise in content production, projection mapping, technical design, and show control in order to design an immersive environment full of surprise.

For the theatre’s screening room, we created a digital trompe l’oeil architecture styled to echo both the look of classic Hollywood cinemas, as well as the DreamWorks brand. This complex illusion is revealed partway through the show, when the characters suddenly burst out of the screen onto the walls.

The challenge of this project was to seamlessly integrate DreamWorks’ animated media into the scenery we created through projection mapping. To do this, we worked at the level of feature film CGI animation and closely collaborated with the studio at each stage of content creation. Our team oversaw the technical design intent of the space, to ensure that these intricate visuals would achieve this astonishing effect from every seat in the house.
