Massive renovations are underway at Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, Japan. As part of this revitalization project to modernize the station, Moment Factory and Sony Japan partnered with East Japan Railway Company (JR East) & Jeki to develop a flagship multimedia installation in the East-West Passage, opening to the public in the spring of 2021.
Our creative and technical teams have been able to explore innovative approaches to enhance the passenger experience, while following JR East’s vision. The unique expertises from both our organizations, in addition to Jeki’s knowhow, are complementary as we work together in developing passenger-minded multimedia enhancements.
Shinjuku Station is the busiest transit hub in the world, resulting in a complex environment where we aim to help passengers enjoy and mark their passage through Shinjuku by synchronizing lighting, sound, and visual content into a holistic and harmonious ambience.
Amy Chartrand, Creative Director adds: “ Because of the many passengers, this unique space requires that people keep moving, ‘feeling’ the environmental content around them as they pass through rather than stopping to look at it. We designed the installation uniquely for this need.”
Normand-Pierre Bilodeau, Producer, adds: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime visionary project. It exemplifies what can be done for public life in urban environments when you combine revenue generation, operations, and creativity.”
