Each kit includes various types of handheld multimedia devices disguised as Parks Canada gear: maps, lanterns, flashlights, backpacks and more.

The group explores the park together using their tool kit. The operation is foolproof thanks to a wireless deployable system that turns the tools automatically on and off, triggering video content, special effects, music and voice over. With the tools uniquely activated at different spots across the park, participants work together to stage multimedia moments of discovery. From salmon swimming up the Rouge River to a submerged town of Lake Minnewanka, each moment is a combination of multimedia effects created by the tool kit.

The experience was offered at and tailored to two different sites: Banff National Park in Alberta, and Rouge Urban National Park in east Toronto. In each case, the parks are shaped by unseen cultural, ecological, and geological narratives. The team wanted to make these narratives visible, but also demonstrate how their multiplicity and continuity shapes the landscapes and wildlife ecosystems.

As both sites are National Parks, the team also sought a ‘leave no trace’ approach for the project. To minimize onsite installation, the entire operation was designed to be battery-powered and portable; participants could ‘pack in and pack out’ their experience. We further neutralized the project’s carbon footprint with the purchase of carbon credits, another first for Moment Factory.

Participants discover a new view of the parks through both through the collective group format and the content of the experience, which includes collaboration with Indigenous communities. With a nod to the future of these spaces, Illuminations: human/nature invites participants to consider the real lack of boundaries between humans and wild nature in urban and conservation contexts. The tool kits are a tangible metaphor for stewardship, inviting participants to consider not only the tools we use to protect natural spaces, such as policy and advocacy, but our role in wielding them., Natural Sites, Touristic Sites, Digital Placemaking, Digital Artwork, Immersive Experiences, Interactivity Gamification, Visual Content Creation Production

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0642/9625/5685/files/Moment-Factory-ILLUMINATIONS-HUMAN-NATURE-Banff-Rouge20-WS.jpg?v=1715093704
winters-dream
Winter's Dream

Winter’s Dream is an innovative outdoor experience inspired by the magic of the winter season. Projections mapped onto the floor and surrounding walls transform a black-and-white forest mural created by New Mexico artist Nate Gutierrez into a flourishing interactive ecosystem. As guests first approach, it’s as if fungus germinates and releases spores they can interact with, followed by a reactive digital forest made of pixels and glitches. Neon draws guests into the next scene like characters in a surreal arboretum. As the forest gradually fills with swathes of colour, the final act entices visitors to splash digital brushstrokes across the room, almost like a life-size paint by numbers. Intuitive visual cues and an ambient score by Sante Fe musician Cole Bee Wilson pull guests into the supernatural world and invite them to trigger enhanced effects. For the occasion, we re-conceptualized the arena’s concourse as the Hall of Heroes, effectively creating a public space where fans could engage with the team’s history and take their part in it. When visitors arrive to the Hall of Heroes, they find something familiar, and yet there is still a great deal to discover with layers of facts and figures supported by footage of memorable plays. We even installed a photobooth at Trevor Linden’s bench so fans can take a snapshot and then share it through the system on social media or by email. Further along, ‘Forever Canucks’ is a hallway of framed LED screens we equipped with motion sensors so the installation responds to a fan’s presence. It features a catalogue of interactive player cards to take visitors back to the nostalgia of card trading and a virtual carousel that allows fans to access top ten moments like best goals, all on a custom graphic interface branded for the Vancouver Canucks. If an incredible play happens during a game, the system even has the web-smart technology to update the installation in real time based on fan votes. We wanted to create an installation that would speak to and enhance the fan experience for all ages. We accomplished this by designing an installation customized for the Canucks fan, a cross between a museum exhibit that displays historical moments and an immersive and multimedia environment with many opportunities for interactivity. Working closely with the curators at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the onsite team at the Grand Palais, we developed a concept to activate the Escalier des Arts, a staircase located in between the first and second floors of the museum. Contrasting the classic baroque lines of the undulating staircase with imagery reminiscent of Gaultier’s in-your-face approach to haute couture, the installation evokes a boldness fit for the couturier’s world. As visitors reach the top of the staircase, they are face to face with a screen. Standing before the installation, which functions like a mirror reflecting Gaultier’s vision, visitors see themselves as Gaultier would see them. After all, the ‘enfant-rebelle’ couturier is famous for finding his muses in everyday life. In reflecting on the exhibition, it was important for visitors to be able to see the relationship between their unique beauty and the fashion as something to be worn. Participatory technology could play a key role in making this connection. Our installation created an essential link in the exhibition between everyday muse and affectionately inspired garment. To achieve this, we developed several modular storytelling threads relevant to passengers: the passenger experience, the iconography of Los Angeles, and the destinations served by the Tom Bradley International Terminal. This modular approach allows the features to provide a consistent but surprising experience as passengers transition through the terminal. With each media feature, we sought an appropriate level of engagement to highlight key moments, signposting the emotional arc of the travel experience with ambient storytelling and playful interactive components. The goal was to capture imagination without overwhelming passengers by competing with their practical trajectory and efficient way-finding. Real-time weather data, a clock, and travel information, for example, are incorporated into the content so the media features are informational as much as they are a work of art and ambience. Created over 16 months, the more than 4 hours of video content we produced for the installation required a massive coordination effort with location shoots on 3 continents, time-lapse photography, ultra-high-speed filming in laboratory conditions, live-action shoots with actors and elaborate sets, interactive real-time 3D and video effects. Despite this abundance of content, there is no sense of screens or technology within the terminal, only architecture that comes alive. The success of this collaboration is an example of how content production and multimedia design can dovetail with architectural plans to support the flow of traffic through a space and enhance user experience. The modular design of the content also leaves the system open to development with the addition of new content, sponsorships, and ideas. No longer would the airport be an uninspired place to transition through as quickly as possible. First, a public square bordered by animated containers formed a focal point where anyone was invited to speak through the megaphone before a gathered audience. Second, voice-recognition software designed by the Computer Research Institute of Montreal captured fragments of text from each speaker. These fragments were 3D projection-mapped onto the façade of UQAM’s President-Kennedy building as an evolving visual manifestation that captured the ephemeral and energetic quality of public speech. Finally, a “speakers’ walk”, incorporating a custom-designed audio-visual setup, extended the length of the promenade. The walk showcased seven key figures who have shaped public space in Montreal with their words. Revisiting these figures brought to mind the potential power of speech in a public forum through historical example.
