Each kit includes various types of handheld multimedia devices disguised as Parks Canada gear: maps, lanterns, flashlights, backpacks and more.

The group explores the park together using their tool kit. The operation is foolproof thanks to a wireless deployable system that turns the tools automatically on and off, triggering video content, special effects, music and voice over. With the tools uniquely activated at different spots across the park, participants work together to stage multimedia moments of discovery. From salmon swimming up the Rouge River to a submerged town of Lake Minnewanka, each moment is a combination of multimedia effects created by the tool kit.

The experience was offered at and tailored to two different sites: Banff National Park in Alberta, and Rouge Urban National Park in east Toronto. In each case, the parks are shaped by unseen cultural, ecological, and geological narratives. The team wanted to make these narratives visible, but also demonstrate how their multiplicity and continuity shapes the landscapes and wildlife ecosystems.

As both sites are National Parks, the team also sought a ‘leave no trace’ approach for the project. To minimize onsite installation, the entire operation was designed to be battery-powered and portable; participants could ‘pack in and pack out’ their experience. We further neutralized the project’s carbon footprint with the purchase of carbon credits, another first for Moment Factory.

Participants discover a new view of the parks through both through the collective group format and the content of the experience, which includes collaboration with Indigenous communities. With a nod to the future of these spaces, Illuminations: human/nature invites participants to consider the real lack of boundaries between humans and wild nature in urban and conservation contexts. Our team created an original set design and custom architectural space. Uplift makes full use of a multifaceted canvas incorporating 2D and 3D animations as well as 360-degree video projection mapping. Stories range from a forest stroll to city parkour as we follow the characters’ gaze across their landscape. Finally, the gaze turns on guests at the show as a young girl peeks at the audience through a window. We are all part of the Canadian story. By focusing on Canadians and in particular, by zooming into the lives of five Canadians from across the country, we open visitors’ imaginations to the multitude of stories that make up our population. The creative team at Moment Factory ended up designing a one-year program based on the identity of Atlantic City. These four multimedia shows bring Boardwalk Hall to life by pushing the boundaries of entertainment. Consisting of 2D and 3D animations, original soundtrack musical scores and a multitude of sophisticated 3D mapping effects, the result is a magical immersive experience for locals and visitors. AC DREAMIN Moment Factory invites visitors to navigate six different magical worlds: a mysterious train station, a luxurious hotel, a crazy theme park, a surreal lighthouse, a dreamy underwater world, and the fantastic Boardwalk at night. Viewers follow a magical dream shared by two friends in a modern fairy tale. For the first time in the Boardwalk Hall project, Moment Factory used live-action footage with actors performing in a narrative linking the show to the spirit of the city. BOARDWALK BEAT Boardwalk Beat takes the audience on a musical journey through time. Moment Factory’s team explored the musical movements and graphic worlds of every decade from the 20s to the present, resulting in a new 8-minute show designed to make everyone walking the Boardwalk want to dance all summer. DUALITY Moment Factory introduced a new sensory experience with Duality, between land and sea, representing the best of both worlds. Over eight and a half minutes, two characters — represented by expressive light projected onto either side of Boardwalk Hall — grow and slowly take over the entire building, bathing it in pulsing light and vibrant visuals. All elements come together in a cohesive manner, representing collaboration, exploration and creation. WINTER SWEET Created to celebrate the wonders of winter, Winter Sweet juxtaposes the beauty and elegance of winter with the childhood joys of snow, candy and holiday icons. The beams reached a height of 2 kilometres and were visible from all over Montreal. The prudent simplicity of the installation was a new direction for Moment Factory. The company quickly rose to a leadership position in the transportation-equipment industry thanks to its snowmobiles, subway cars and airplanes. Thanks to that independence, ATB will be able to keep its new system current for the long term. With ATB’s guests set to be at the core of these installations, both inside and outside experiences are equipped with motion sensors that detect their presence, proximity, and movements. Interactive content allows direct contact between employees and visitors in the offices, and the street-side installation is activated only when someone is near. The goal was to bring residents out of their homes to experience of their city. In considering this project, we encountered a number of challenges: not only does Winnipeg face harsh winters, nights are exceptionally long through the colder months making the climate a potential obstacle in bringing visitors downtown to enjoy the installation.

URBAN NORTHERN LIGHTS, A multimedia installation inhabiting local legend suggesting that if one whistles auroras get brighter., Custom, , , , Canada, Public Spaces, Winnipeg, Business Objectives Showcase Site Increase Dwell Time Services Technical Design Lighting Design Custom Software Development Realtime Visual Content, During our research phase, we dug deep into the stories and history of the city. Along the way we came across a local legend suggesting that if one whistles, the Northern Lights will glow brighter. A rare and spectacular phenomenon, we were inspired to capture some of the magic of this legend and natural wonder. In order to bring these dancing flashes of colourful light to an experience of downtown Winnipeg, we created multi-coloured prismatic lamps that line downtown sidewalks. At once artful and whimsical, they are responsive to the nearby sounds of passerby. Whistle a tune, and they flood the cityscape around you with light, splashing snowy sidewalks with vibrant colour. The installation, which is encountered by walking through the area, is perfect for wintry nights when the only way to stay warm is to keep moving. As cities venture toward creative solutions to bring life to their cultural centers, the nighttime becomes a valuable canvas for interactive multimedia; light casts a welcoming beam outward, calling visitors in. More than a stand-alone interactive installation, Winnipeg’s Listening Lights complement other cultural and place-making initiatives by visually tying the area together from one block to the next with an interactive and playful signature., Public Spaces, Digital Placemaking, Interactivity Gamification
